Portinga, 56, Sioux Falls, SD, died Thursday, June 15, 2023, at his home surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with cancer. Merle was preceded in death by his wife, Janell his parents, and his nephew Nathaniel Hinton. Merle will be missed by his wife, Jody Monroe, Sioux Falls, SD, his step-son, Justin (Abby Wagenaar) Cole step-daughter, Angela (Cole) Vera two step-grandsons and four step-granddaughters his brother-in-law, Gordon Kenyon brothers, Mark (Connie) Hinton, Clarion, IA, and Mike (Elaine) Hinton, Lady Lake, FL and two nieces, and five nephews. ![]() He enjoyed participating in the high school chorus and singing for weddings and funerals. Merle was blessed with a beautiful singing voice. His personal collection includes some of his own boyhood toys. Merle was an enthusiastic vintage toy collector/seller. He was a long-time premium seller on eBay. He was the number one sales rep in 2013, for the company he worked for. Over the years, he earned trips to Alaska and Europe. He could strike up a conversation with anyone and find something in common to talk about. In 1982, Merle was united in marriage to Janell Fish. He attended the University of Northern Iowa. He graduated from Clarion High School in 1978. Merle Richard Hinton was born on December 14, 1959, in Clarion, IA, to R. The contributions will support Avera Home Hospice Care. Hinton, age 63, Sioux Falls, passed away Sunday, June 18, 2023, at his home in Sioux Falls, SD, surrounded by his family, including his loyal dog, Bella.Ī Celebration of Life will be held at the Clarion Church of Christ, in Clarion, Iowa, on Saturday, June 24, 2023, at 10:30 am. ![]() Tim is preceded in death by his father, Gerrit Doppenberg his sister, Barb Quick his beloved dog, Taz and many cats. Tim is survived by his wife, Kathy, Brandon daughter, Sondra, Harrisburg three grandchildren, Avah, Sophia, and Isaiah mother, Norma Doppenberg, Brandon two brothers, Steve (Lynn) Doppenberg, Brandon, and Kenny Doppenberg, Pierre two sisters, Carol (Rollie) Smith, Brandon, and Laurie (Brian) Gustafson, Pierre several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was a great storyteller and loved a good laugh. Tim was a friend to everyone and loved to talk and listen to people. He loved going to the races at Huset’s, going skiing, snowmobiling, and motorcycling. He took Sondra “his sidekick” with him everywhere, along with his dog, Taz. Tim married Kathy Rang on November 5, 1983. One thing that he was great at is that he ”Timmy-Rigged” things and everything was done in his own way. He was gifted in helping people, giving them respect, and sharing his extensive knowledge with those who were willing to learn his different trades. He loved to handle all kinds of projects and was a problem solver. At the age of 16, he rebuilt his parent’s camper. Upon graduation, Tim worked many different jobs, including as an electrician, a plumber, a bowling alley repairman, auto repairman, ran a carwash, and laundromat, and operated Sky View Lounge, to name a few. He attended grade school in Valley Springs and later graduated from Brandon Valley High School. ![]() His brothers wouldn’t let his parents take him home from the hospital unless they named him “Timmy” from Timmy and Lassie. Tim was born in Sioux Falls, on March 6, 1963, to Gerrit and Norma (Christensen) Doppenberg. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established. Another Celebration of Life will follow at the Brandon VFW from 6-8pm, Thursday evening. Burial will follow at Brandon Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 9:30am, Thursday, June 22, 2023, at Brandon Lutheran Church, with Funeral Services beginning at 11am.
